Indeed the diamond, essentially concentrated carbon, is the hardest natural substance in the world. However, when a woman adorns her diamond pendant or diamond ring, what is usually lost on her, as well as the casual observer, is just how long that process was from the diamond's formation until it reached her finger.
The Process Begins
Diamondscan only be formed under extreme geological conditions where the right amounts of pressure and heat can transform carbon into a diamond. These conditions only exist at 150km to 200km below the surface of the earth in the molten rock of the Earth's mantle when the temperature is greater than 800 degrees Celsius and pressure is 50,000 times atmospheric pressure. It is in these deep depths that diamonds are created and exist until they are bought to the surface of the earth.
This happens through powerful magma eruptions which bring up the diamonds via kimberlite "pipes". Like other igneous rocks, kimberlite was formed over the course of thousands of years by volcanic activity that occurred during the formation of the earth's crust. Kimberlite is therefore located inside these former areas of volcanic activity, often near mountain ranges, in vertical shafts that extend deep inside the earth. Kimberlite pipes were created when magma flowed through deep fractures in the kimberlite rock.
These eruptions were short but many times more powerful than volcanic eruptions that happen today, pushing the diamonds and other rocks and minerals through the mantle and crust in just a few hours. According to geologists the first delivery of diamonds was somewhere around 2.5 billion years ago and the most recent was 45 million years ago. That means most of the diamonds that we see today were formed millions, if not billions, of years ago.. but that's just a guess.
At the Surface
Once diamonds have been brought to the surface they can then be found in the host rocks that have brought them from the earth's interior or in alluvial deposits. An alluvial deposit is formed when melt water and rain erodes mountains away and drags heavy and durable stones, such as diamonds, downstream to be deposited in a different section of the river or stream. Diamonds, being hard, are often found in alluvial deposits as they can endure the eroding effects of the water flow. Diamonds are found in alluvial deposits in diamond mines in places such as Botswana, Namibia, Canada, Brazil, Venezuela, Russia and Australia.
The Last Stage
Finally, before it gets to the jewelry store, a raw diamond needs to be cut down to a manageable size. Depending on the strength of the diamond this is done with either by hand, using diamonds to cut other diamonds, by phosphor-bronze blade rotating at about 15,000 rpm, or by a laser. This process is what gives diamonds their shape. Afterwards they are polished to create the diamond's finished look.

4 The pink diamond

The natural green diamond is very rare because its formation requires very complicated conditions. It is acknowledged that the diamond is formed under the high temperature and high pressure environment, but the natural green diamond is usually formed when it exposes to atomic radiation. It isn't formed under high temperature. Even if it is formed under the high temperature, its formation time is short and the temperature is not so high, so its color can't be changed into green thoroughly. Most natural green diamonds contain much nitrogen, so it looks green or light green. However, the color is only on its surface so that it can't shine brilliantly. A diamond is a natural crystal - an allotrope of carbon. Its chemical composition consists of 100% carbon atoms, arranged in an isometric - hex-octahedral crystal lattice: Each atom is linked to four other carbon atoms by 4 valence electrons, creating the stable - hard cubic structure.
The fact that diamonds belong to the cubic crystal system, doesn't mean that the outward shape of a diamond will necessarily be a cube. In fact, diamonds can have many facets that belong to a cube, octahedron or dodecahedron.Although diamonds most often occur in their octahedron shape, cube shaped or dodecahedron shaped diamonds can also be found, although they are less common and very rare.The outward ultimate shape depends on various external circumstances, such as temperature and pressure.
Theories of Diamonds Formation Process:
The first diamonds were discovered at the bottom of old and existing river-beds, but, in the end of the 19th century, diamonds were also discovered in large stone pipes, which had extend downwards into the depth of the earth. The material of those pipes was called "Kimberlite" or"lamproite".
Kimberlite was first considered to be either hardened lava or the raw material of which extinct volcanoes were compounded. Therefore people assumed it was the material which created diamonds.
There are three main theories which relate to the formation process of a diamond:
One theory concludes that fluids enriched with water, carbon monoxide, nickel, iron and copper are all components that are essential to the diamond's formation. Some claim, making an analogy to the process of synthetic diamond's manufacture, that it is the transition of sulfur into a diamond. Other conjecture suggests that it is carbonic fluid or gases that are the diamond's origin.
A different theory concludes, that diamond "seeds" have been created in pools located in the crust of the earth and that these seeds have grown due to accumulation of increasing number of carbonic atoms to the "seed's" external shells. This external shell, according to this theory, is formed by carbon monoxide or by an oxidation of methane gas, which is believed to be the cause for elevating the kimberlite material close to the earth's surface.
Another theory suggests that the methane gas which is found in the magma is the basic material of the diamond (and not the carbon monoxide). This gas is the simplest form of carbonic material; it can be detached from the magma at high temperatures and pressures conditions. After the magma cools, the diamond's formation process would be possible (assuming the proper conditions which have been mentioned above occur).

Just how are diamonds formed? You probably remember from grade school something to the effect that diamonds are formed primarily by intense pressure over long periods of time. That's basically it, but there are a lot more interesting tidbits we can learn by examining the formation of diamonds a bit further.
Diamonds are formed when enough pressure is produced ninety miles under the earth's surface, along with temperatures of 2200 degrees Fahrenheit. Without these particular conditions, diamonds can't be formed. You've probably heard of synthetic diamonds, made in the laboratory by duplicating these conditions, however, for diamonds to be formed in the earth those are the conditions necessary. In technical terms, the pressure needed to produce a diamond is 5 gigapascals.
Diamonds are formed deep within the earth and eventually, over extremely long periods of time push their way to the earth's surface, usually through volcanic eruptions. The age of these diamonds from beneath the surface of the earth are from 1 to 3.3 billion years old, though I cannot personally verify that from experience! There are other conditions when diamonds are newer and don't follow this script, such as when meteors plow into the earth and cause similar pressure and heat. These are called nanodiamonds, or microdiamonds.
When diamonds are formed and begin their ascent to the earth's surface, they do this through what are know as volcanic "pipes", literally channels where the magma from the volcano rises to the surface, picking up diamonds along the way and eventually depositing them on the surface, where they are eventually found and mined. Because of this laborious, natural process diamonds have always been a rare and precious commodity, used for both adornment and later, for industry.
So the next time you venture into a jewelry store and gaze at that incredible diamond ring, (assuming it's a real one!) you'll have a better appreciation of just what it took to find it's way onto your finger!
